DEMA Expands Disaster Assistance Program to Aid Those Impacted by Typhoon Tino

 ** Funds Available to Assist DEMA Member Exhibitors and Buyers of DEMA Show™ 2025 **


DEMA announced today that the DEMA Executive Committee has approved the expansion of the 2025 DEMA Disaster Assistance Program to include DEMA-Member Show Exhibitors and Buyers located in the Philippines who have been impacted by Typhoon Tino.


DEMA’s Disaster Assistance Program was previously activated on October 29 to include those who were affected by Hurricane Melissa.


This additional expansion will account for exhibitors and buyers located in the Philippines as a result of Typhoon Tino. DEMA-Member companies who were negatively impacted by this storm and who planned to exhibit at DEMA Show 2025 are eligible to apply for the funds to help them exhibit. Buyers who planned to attend DEMA Show can also apply for funds to assist in staying onsite at DEMA Show.


"DEMA’s Disaster Assistance Program funds are available to DEMA Member Exhibitors at DEMA Show 2025 who are located in declared disaster areas following Hurricane Melissa and Typhoon Tino, to aid them in getting to and exhibiting at DEMA Show 2025,” said Tom Ingram, President and CEO of DEMA.  “One registered ‘Buyer’ from each DEMA-Member operation located in these designated disaster areas and staying in the DEMA hotel block is also eligible for funds to assist in attending DEMA Show so they can buy the products and services they need to keep their businesses in operation.”


DEMA has earmarked disaster assistance funds specifically for affected DEMA-Member exhibitors and registered buyers located in the designated disaster areas impacted by Hurricane Melissa and Typhoon Tino, including:

  • Bahamas
  • Dominican Republic
  • Haiti
  • Jamaica
  • Philippines
  • Turks and Caicos

EXHIBITOR ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

DEMA’s Disaster Assistance Program funds are available to DEMA-Member Exhibitors who were fully paid for their contracted exhibit space by 5:00 PM Pacific time, September 22, 2025, and physically located within the aforementioned designated disaster areas impacted by Hurricane Melissa and Typhoon Tino. Qualifying exhibitors are eligible to receive disaster assistance funds based on their exhibit space size. For-profit exhibitors are eligible for $400 US per contracted 10x10 exhibit space and non-profit exhibitors paying the DEMA-Member non-profit rate are eligible for $100 per 10x10 space.


Funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis up to the maximum available from the DEMA disaster assistance fund.


All interested parties must apply for the assistance funds on site at DEMA Show in Orlando, FL by visiting DEMA Central (Booth #421) prior to the close of the Show at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 14, 2025.

 

BUYER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

One registered “Buyer” from each DEMA-Member organization located in the impacted area is eligible for assistance when they are staying in the official DEMA Show hotel block (Rosen Centre or Days Inn). Eligible Buyers can be reimbursed at the base rate for one night’s stay in the hotel. The individual must be registered as a “Buyer” (as defined by DEMA) for DEMA Show 2025 and be booked in the DEMA hotel block prior to midnight Pacific Time on November 13, 2025. DEMA will reimburse the Buyer for the DEMA hotel block base price of one hotel night stay (single occupancy), regardless of the actual rate paid.
Buyers applying for assistance must provide a copy of the receipt for the DEMA Block hotel stay to the DEMA Office by 5:00 PM Pacific time on December 4, 2025.


All funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis up to the maximum of the allotted DEMA disaster assistance fund. Exhibitors are not eligible for hotel reimbursement assistance under this program but can receive Exhibitor Assistance as described above.

DEMA Opens Search for Next President & CEO

 **Applications now being accepted for the position beginning early in 2026**  

The Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) has announced the opening of its search for a new President and Chief Executive Officer, with the selected candidate expected to assume the role in early 2026. This leadership transition follows the upcoming retirement of Tom Ingram, DEMA’s long-time President and CEO, who will step down at the end of 2025 after more than two decades of distinguished service to the Association and the diving industry.

Under Ingram’s leadership, DEMA has evolved into a true trade association dedicated to advancing the diving industry worldwide. His tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including the continued growth and success of DEMA Show™, the expansion of meaningful industry research and marketing programs, and impactful legislative advocacy supporting dive professionals and businesses across the globe.

“Tom’s steady leadership and unwavering commitment have strengthened DEMA and positioned the organization for a vibrant future,” said Dan Orr, DEMA Board Chair. “We’re seeking a visionary leader who can continue this legacy—someone with the strategic insight, industry passion, and collaborative spirit to guide DEMA and the diving community forward.”

Tom Ingram, DEMA President and CEO, Announces Retirement

Tom Ingram, long-time President and CEO, has announced his retirement from the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA).

Under Ingram’s leadership, DEMA has evolved into a true trade association for the diving industry—one that not only continues to grow DEMA Show™ but also delivers meaningful industry research, impactful marketing benefits and communication programs, and strong legislative advocacy that helps the industry. He also played a key role in bringing stakeholders across the industry together to grow the diving industry worldwide.

“It has been my privilege and honor to be part of DEMA and this industry,” said Ingram. “I have so many to thank for the opportunity to serve in this position—the DEMA Board of Directors, the volunteer leadership and committee members, the professional DEMA staff, the DEMA Show™ Management team, and of course the DEMA Members.”

“During my 23 years at DEMA, I have been proud of the work the DEMA Staff and Board have accomplished together, including overcoming economic downturns such as the challenges of COVID-19. I expect this trajectory will continue, and I look forward to watching the organization’s continued success in the years ahead.”

“Tom Ingram has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience in the diving industry to the position of DEMA President/CEO that has benefited both the diving consumer and the industry stakeholders. The DEMA Board of Directors is committed to finding a replacement for Tom that will continue to work with all industry stakeholder groups to focus on industry growth and the mission of DEMA,” Dan Orr, DEMA Board Chair.

Ingram will step down as President and CEO at the end of 2025. The DEMA Board has chartered a Search Committee and will begin the search to fill this position in the coming weeks. During this transition, Ingram will work closely with the Board and DEMA Staff to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities. 2025 Quarter 1 Diving Equipment Manufacturing Purchase Index (MPI) Data Now Available

 EMA has released 2025 quarter 1 data for the Diving Equipment Manufacturing Purchase Index (MPI). The data includes New Orders and Inventories in key diving equipment categories.

Data from the newly released MPI data covers quarter 1 (Q1) of 2025 and compares it to Q1 2025 and Q4 2024. The data is available in two different reports, Category and Equipment Type, both of which are available in the DEMA Store.

DEMA’s MPI is unique in that it captures aggregate trend data for New Orders and for Inventory in stock on a quarterly basis.  Participating manufacturers report to an independent third-party administrator (TPA) to ensure their data remains confidential and secure. Reporting consists of companies comparing their data points in the current reporting period to those in the previous quarter, as well as to the same quarter during the previous year. 

  • New Orders: Reflects the levels of new orders received from customers.
  • Inventories: Reflects the changes in inventory levels in stock at the time of the report.

Data is aggregated for all participating companies by the TPA and made available for review. No individual company data is reported. The reported data combines domestic (US) with international information.

For both New Orders and Inventory, the trend data in the available MPI report is read as a percentage from 0 to 100:

  • An MPI reading equaling 50 percent indicates no change.
  • An MPI reading of less than 50 percent indicates a contraction.
  • An MPI greater than 50 percent indicates an expansion of new orders or inventories, as compared with the previous quarter or previous year.

The further from 50 percent (in either direction) the greater the level of change (trend) has occurred during the reporting period.

Aggregated data is available on both Equipment Type and Category. The Category definitions can be found within the report and include Soft Goods, Exposure Protection, Hard Goods and Accessories and Bags.  Each Category is further defined within the reports as Equipment Types, and include regulators, BCs, fins, masks, snorkels, wetsuits, drysuits, and more.

Reporting companies receive the aggregated data from the TPA that includes all the detailed Equipment Types in the Categories in which they report. These companies also earn seniority space selection points connected to DEMA Show, enabling them to select exhibit space at the Show before other, non-participating companies.  All DEMA Member Manufacturers selling equipment included in the study are eligible to participate.

DEMA Members can download the broad Category reports at no cost, and non-members can pay a non-member rate for this data.  DEMA Members also have access to more detailed Equipment Type data at member rates, while others can purchase this data at non-member rates. Both the Category and Equipment Type, both of which are available in the DEMA Store.

DEMA Board of Directors to Meet May 22nd

 DEMA’s Board of Directors will hold a virtual Board meeting on May 22, 2025, to discuss how the association can support and serve the industry and its members in the coming year.

The Board meeting will begin by voting to approve the “consent agenda,” a Robert’s Rules of Order device used to obtain “general consent” intended to expedite approval of routine items. The Board is provided all reports and other documents in advance of the Board meeting, including consent agenda items. This allows Board Members to study the documents in detail prior to the meeting so that the Board can spend its limited meeting time discussing forward-thinking items, policy, and strategic issues that demand its attention.

URGENT ALERT: New Year – New Congress and Time to Ask New Leaders to Support The DIVE BOAT Act

 DEMA first alerted its members to a congressional policy change that would dramatically impact the U.S. dive community back in 2022. Among other changes, Section 11503 of the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act - the Small Passenger Vessel Act (SPVA) created retroactive liability exposure (2 years) for a subset of small businesses primarily in the dive community. This broke the commercial insurance market and dramatically raised annual insurance premiums for dive businesses. Notably, fishing vessels and cruise lines (among others) were exempted from these painful insurance hikes.

Why Does It Matter?

These changes, enacted by the 117th Congress, broke the commercial insurance market and increased business costs for dive stores and operators around the country, including those in non-coastal states. DEMA regularly hears from stores and operators about painful choices they face because of these increased costs. Sadly, DEMA knows owners and operators that had to forgo upgrades to their boats and/or equipment, lay off staff, limit staff hours, raise their prices for consumers, or even close their business. None of these decisions are easy or taken lightly, especially at a time when, “conventional water recreation” businesses, which includes scuba diving, saw 39% increases in operating costs since 2022 according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

DEMA is Working for You

DEMA believes in accountability when wrongful actions take place, but not at the expense of thousands of small businesses and employees who operate safely, lawfully, and responsibly every day. DEMA has worked tirelessly to educate members of Congress about the unintended impact of changes made by the 117th Congress, and we were close to striking a deal in the 118th Congress. As you know, once a Congress adjourns permanently, the legislative process has to start anew. DEMA is now educating newly elected officials serving in the 119th Congress and continues our push for a fix that holds bad actors accountable but does not unfairly punish the entire scuba diving community. 

The DIVE BOAT Act

In consultation with insurance actuaries, DEMA developed proposed language to help fix the broken insurance markets for those operating safely and lawfully. The proposed changes honor the spirit in which the SPVA was enacted by holding overnight vessels to a higher standard. If enacted, the DIVE BOAT Act would.

  • Adjust the timeline for filing a claim against overnight vessels to better align with how business insurance premiums are assessed.
  • Revert day boats back to the same standard as all other passenger vessel operators carved out of the SPVA (e.g., sport fishing, cruise lines, tow boats etc.)

The new Congress intends to update the “US Coast Guard Reauthorization” in 2025 because the last Congress did not finish its work. There is still an opportunity to add the DIVE BOAT Act to this legislation, but we will be much more successful if Congress hears from YOU! DEMA Releases Full Detailed Analyses of Diving Customer Research

DEMA has released detailed demographic and life stage analyses of divers participating in four different activity segments. The data was developed using the Claritas 360 Marketing Information System, including the PRIZM Segmentation Data, and is built around the actual purchasing behavior of customers randomly sampled from more than 7,000 diving consumers who have made certification, dive travel, or dive equipment purchases within the last three years. The research is divided into four separate reports based on different diving consumer activities: Open Water DiversContinuing Education DiversDive Equipment Buyers, and Dive Travel Buyers. 

“In 2025’s fast-paced business landscape, where information flows endlessly through social media and online platforms, the key to staying ahead lies in having actionable insights about consumers and leveraging that data effectively,” stated Tom Ingram, DEMA President & CEO. “With the insights provided in these reports, DEMA Members can identify the most strategic geographic areas to reach potential customers—whether locally or nationwide—and tailor their services and products to meet the evolving needs of their audiences.”

Information in the report includes demographics and psychographics of end-users and is based on the geographic location of the home in which the end-user resides. Each report covers data ranging from age, income, and home ownership/value to stages of family life, education, and other behaviors that govern their recreational activities. Understanding these variables provides a better awareness of customer buying behaviors and an understanding of where to find more and similar customers and is also far more reliable than single variable studies which may use age or income alone.

“Leveraging this data empowers businesses to gain a deeper understanding of their customers and address critical factors, such as whether end-users prefer online shopping, have children at home, or are married,” concluded Ingram. “Each of these insights can significantly influence the messaging businesses use to craft effective advertising and sales strategies.”
