Update on the DIVE BOAT Act

Even with the ongoing dysfunction in Washington, DEMA continues its efforts to push the DIVE BOAT Act forward. Our team developed policy language with the support of outside actuaries to provide dive boat and shop operators with much needed commercial insurance relief.

Since the beginning of 2024, DEMA’s team has been meeting with Members of Congress to help them understand the real-world costs that operators and consumers face as a result of the Small Passenger Vessel Act, which was included in the 2023 National Defense Authorization. Our initial efforts focused on including the DIVE BOAT Act in the 2024 U.S. Coast Guard Reauthorization. However, the Senate has yet to draft its proposed legislation. Given this lapse by Congress, DEMA is exploring other legislative “vehicles” that must be passed.

You may have seen from the news that this has been the least productive Congress in post-WW2 history, with fewer than 40 bills passed during the last 14 months. For comparison, the prior record for the most “do nothing Congress” was in 2013-2014, with 72 bills. However, DEMA is forging ahead and have instead only redoubled our efforts to educate Members and Senators about the challenges our community face.

We still need your help to spread word to policymakers and consumers across the country. Now is a great time to leverage DEMA’s social media campaign materials to educate the community about the reason for increased costs and ask for their support of the DIVE BOAT Act with divers planning for Spring and Summer Vacations.

In response to member requests due to DEMA Show 2024 overlapping with qualifying activities for the 2024 Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, the Official DEMA Show 2024 hotel block opened in mid-February. The block offers thousands of room nights negotiated at exclusive rates for DEMA Show participants at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino (Official Host Hotel) and Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel. Although there are substantial rooms nights available at the Westgate, as promised during DEMA’s January Town Hall, DEMA has expanded the original block at the Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel with new rooms contracted and ready for booking NOW.

As always, DEMA advises all attendees and exhibitors to book within the DEMA Show hotel block as soon as possible, but doing so will be especially important in 2024 with the Formula 1 race taking place shortly after DEMA Show. Hotel rooms in the DEMA Show block will be available only until about 30 days prior to DEMA Show 2024, at which time DEMA must allow the hotels to sell the rooms on the open market (including to Formula 1 attendees). Bookings made in the DEMA Show hotel block are exclusive to DEMA Show 2024 participants and will be verified against DEMA Show Registration.

Please book within the DEMA Show Hotel Block now to secure your stay.

Additionally, with DEMA Show just over 250 days away, DEMA suggests that DEMA Show participants start looking at their flight options for the Show and consider booking flights as soon as possible. Harry Reid International Airport is the main airport in Las Vegas and is 3.5 miles from the Las Vegas Convention Center. Additional travel information is available on DEMAShow.com.
