DEMA ANNOUNCES THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE EXTENDS COMPLIANCE DATE FOR AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) REQUIREMENTS FOR POOLS

The United States Department of Justice has issued an extension on the compliance date for the ADA Standards for Accessible Design for existing pools and spas provided by state and local governments and by public accommodations. The new deadline is now January 31, 2013.

DEMA submitted comments on behalf of the diving industry on March 23, 2012 in favor of delaying the deadline date for certain requirements of Titles II and III of the ADA. The extension of the date for compliance with the new requirements relates to provision of accessible entry and exit for existing swimming pools and spas outlined in the ADA Standard for Accessible Design.

“With the understanding that proper entry and exit equipment is necessary for training facilities used to teach diving to physically challenged individuals, DEMA and the diving industry are gratified the compliance date has been extended,” commented Tom Ingram, Executive Director of DEMA. “The deadline extension will allow for clarification of the requirements and which businesses must comply, and allow for a longer lead time for impacted Industry businesses to budget and plan for necessary changes.”

DEMA will provide additional information to the diving industry on compliance requirements over the coming weeks. For more information on the current ruling click here.
